Highlighting his dialogue with his own work, Georg Baselitz titled a group of his most recent paintings Remix. These works are at the center of the show Georg Baselitz: Pinturas Recentes at Estação da Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. Sponsored by Deutsche Bank, it is the artist’s first solo exhibition of his paintings in South America. 35 years after Baselitz’s participation in the 13th Bienal de São Paulo, 30 paintings from the last 12 years of his career are on view in Brazil. The exhibition is curated by Paulo Venancio Filho, art critic and professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and Christina Braun (University of Cologne) is assistant curator. Several of Baselitz’s works are in the Deutsche Bank Collection. A selection was on view at the New Manege in Moscow. In 1999 the Deutsche Guggenheim showed the exhibition Nostalgia in Istanbul, which presented paintings based on motifs from Caspar David Friedrich in dialogue with aquarelles and drawings from the corporate collection.
The Remix paintings are new versions of famous works he created in the 1960s, such as Die große Nacht im Eimer (The Big Night Down the Drain, 1962/63). With a consistency almost unique in art history, Baselitz consciously painted a part of his oeuvre a second time. The resulting works are not merely the artist taking stock of his creations. Rather, they document an extremely vital engagement with his work and with a younger, figure-oriented generation of artists. Baselitz’s new paintings impress by a faster, more casual manner of painting and an often ironic view of familiar motifs. The works also illustrate his constant development and unbroken desire to experiment.
