As a contribution to European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, Deutsche Bank is sponsoring Collection Tours, an innovative art education project that the bank will realize together with the 20 art museums that have joined together to form the Association of Ruhr Art Museums (RKM). As of March 2010, Collection Tours, which was jointly initiated by Deutsche Bank and RKM, will enable more than 20,000 children and young people from the Ruhr region, as well as several thousand adults, to have encounters with 20th- and 21st-century art. A fleet of specially designed buses will bring visitors to the museums, which with their different collections provide important cultural impetus in the region. The current project was initiated due to the overwhelming response of the Cologne art initiative Wallraf the Museum Bus, which picks up school classes and introduces them to artworks on the way to the Wallraf Richartz Museum. For the campaign, which Deutsche Bank initiated together with the museum, the Deutsche Bank Foundation was presented with the German Cultural Sponsorship Prize for outstanding support of art and culture 2008.
This concept is now being expanded: With Collection Tours school classes are now able to visit an art museum in their respective hometown as well as an additional museum. For example, a tour developed by the Folkwang Museum in Essen and the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop is devoted to the theme of "nothing but color". In addition to exhibition talks and workshops led by art educators, teaching materials were developed specifically for this topic, which will make the bus trip itself an experience. The bus rides, museum visits and events are free of charge for the children and young people.
Michael Münch, who is responsible for Deutsche Bank's social activities in Germany, explained: "The project Collection Tours was developed as part of Deutsche Bank's social commitment. The bank promotes highly talented youth as well as young people who often have only little access to cultural education. With Collection Tours we are creating new paths to art."
